Kitty Hawk vs. Duck vs. Nags Head: Where Should You Stay?
An honest local comparison of Duck, Kitty Hawk and Nags Head to help you pick where to stay on the Outer Banks.

Choosing a town is the first big Outer Banks decision. Here’s an honest comparison of the three most popular northern beach towns — from someone who lives here.
Duck: charming and walkable
Duck is the upscale village of the northern beaches, with a soundside boardwalk, boutique shops, great restaurants and sunsets over Currituck Sound. The trade-off: higher prices, and NC 12 through Duck gets slow on summer afternoons.
Nags Head: classic and lively
Nags Head has Jockey’s Ridge, Jennette’s Pier, the outlets and classic old Outer Banks cottages. It’s the closest of the three to Roanoke Island and Cape Hatteras, and it’s busier in season.
Kitty Hawk: central and relaxed
Kitty Hawk sits in the middle — about 20 minutes to Duck and 20 minutes to Nags Head — with groceries, gas and dozens of restaurants within a few minutes. The oceanfront Beach Road is quiet and residential, many street ends have public beach accesses, and leashed dogs are allowed on the beach year-round.
| Duck | Kitty Hawk | Nags Head | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vibe | Upscale village | Quiet & central | Classic & lively |
| Dining | Soundfront fine dining | Casual seafood, breakfast | Piers & seafood houses |
| Getting around | Slow in summer | Easiest access | Busy Bypass |
| Best for | Shopping, couples | Families, dogs, groups | Kids, day trips south |
