Bringing Your Dog to the Outer Banks: Kitty Hawk Beach Rules & Tips
Kitty Hawk allows dogs on the beach year-round. Here are the leash rules, heat tips and how to find a dog-friendly oceanfront rental.

The Outer Banks is one of the most dog-friendly beach destinations on the East Coast — if you know the rules. Here’s what you need to know about bringing your dog to Kitty Hawk.
Dogs are allowed on Kitty Hawk beaches year-round
Unlike some beach towns that ban dogs in summer, Kitty Hawk welcomes them all year. The rules tighten during peak hours: from the Friday before Memorial Day through the day after Labor Day, between 10 am and 6 pm, your dog must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Outside those hours the leash can be up to 12 feet, or your dog can be off-leash only if it is under voice control within 30 feet and you have a leash in hand. Always pick up after your dog and make sure its rabies tag is current. Check the Town of Kitty Hawk animal rules for the latest details.
Rules change from town to town
Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Southern Shores and Duck each set their own pet rules, and some are stricter in summer. If you’re planning a beach walk outside Kitty Hawk, check that town’s rules first.
Beat the heat
Summer sand gets hot enough to burn paws by late morning. Plan beach time for early morning and evening, bring fresh water and a bowl, and give your dog shade. On hot afternoons, the shady trails of Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve are a cooler option (leashed pets only).
Finding a dog-friendly oceanfront rental
This is the hard part — many oceanfront homes don’t allow pets. All three of our Kitty Hawk homes do, with up to two dogs each ($250 per dog). Crab House even has a gated deck and side yard. See all of our dog-friendly oceanfront rentals.
