Why September Is the Best Month on the Outer Banks
Warm water, fewer crowds and better rates — why locals love the Outer Banks in September.

Ask Outer Banks locals for their favorite month and most will say September. Here’s why the weeks after Labor Day might be the best time for your beach vacation.
The ocean is at its warmest
Water temperatures on the northern Outer Banks typically peak in late August and stay comfortable well into September, so swimming season doesn’t end on Labor Day.
Fewer crowds, easier traffic
Once schools are back in session, the bridge backups disappear, restaurants have open tables, and you can find a quiet stretch of beach almost anywhere.
Better value
Rental rates usually drop after the summer peak, and it’s easier to book the exact week — or the exact group of homes — you want.
Fall fishing and events
Fall brings some of the best surf and pier fishing of the year, plus events like the Duck Jazz Festival in October.
The one caveat: hurricanes
September is the heart of hurricane season. Most weeks are beautiful, but keep an eye on forecasts, follow Dare County Emergency Management if an evacuation is ordered, and consider travel insurance.
