Where to Eat Near Kitty Hawk Milepost 4: A Local’s Short List
The restaurants we send our own guests to — all within five minutes of the Kitty Hawk Beach Road at Milepost 4.

Staying near Milepost 4 in Kitty Hawk puts you in one of the best eating neighborhoods on the Outer Banks. Here’s the short list we give our own guests — every spot below is within about five minutes of our oceanfront homes.
Walkable on a nice night
Black Pelican Oceanfront Cafe is the classic: seafood, steaks and wood-fired pizza inside a converted 1874 lifesaving station, right across the Beach Road from the ocean. Next door, Hurricane Mo’s is a laid-back, year-round bar and grill a few steps from the sand. Over on the Bypass, Bad Bean Baja Grill does excellent fish tacos and margaritas.
For breakfast
Stack ’em High is a cafeteria-style Outer Banks breakfast tradition — pancakes, biscuits and omelets fast. A minute farther south, Henry’s has been serving big Southern breakfasts since 1989. Coffee people should head to Front Porch Cafe or Shore Coffee Roasters at the north end of town.
The one everyone talks about
John’s Drive-In is a walk-up Beach Road institution. Order the fried tuna or dolphin boat and a hand-spun milkshake and eat at the picnic tables. It’s seasonal, so check that it’s open before you go.
A nicer dinner
Ocean Boulevard Bistro & Martini Bar is the date-night pick on the Beach Road — creative American plates and a serious martini list. Make a reservation in summer. The Pony & The Boat and TRiO (wine bar upstairs, gourmet market downstairs) are great, more casual alternatives on the Bypass.
Night in? Get it steamed
Pick up local shrimp, crab and fish at Carawan Seafood — they’ll steam it for you — then eat on the deck. Liquor is sold only at the ABC store (5440 N Croatan Hwy); beer and wine are at the grocery stores.
