Kitty Hawk vacation rentals: where to stay & what to know
Oceanfront, between the highways or tucked in the maritime forest — a local owner’s guide to renting in Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks.

Kitty Hawk is a quiet, central Outer Banks town (roughly Mileposts 0–4.5) with rentals in three main areas: oceanfront and ocean-side homes on the Beach Road, homes between the highways, and wooded and soundside homes in Kitty Hawk Village. Summer rentals typically run Saturday to Saturday.
- Best for beach time: Beach Road oceanfront (like our homes at MP 3¾)
- Best for value: between the highways
- Best for quiet & sunsets: Kitty Hawk Village / soundside
Three ways to stay in Kitty Hawk
Homes directly on the sand along N Virginia Dare Trail. Walk off the deck to the beach, hear the surf all night. Highest demand — book early.
Homes between the Beach Road and the US-158 Bypass. A short walk or drive to a public beach access, usually at lower rates, close to restaurants and groceries.
West of the Bypass near Kitty Hawk Woods and the sound — shady lots, soundside sunsets, bike paths and a quieter, local feel.

What to know before you book a Kitty Hawk rental
- Weekly stays are the norm in summer, usually Saturday to Saturday. Shorter stays are easier to find in spring and fall.
- Check what’s included. Many by-owner homes ask you to bring linens and towels; ask about pet fees, parking and Wi-Fi.
- Know the beach rules. Kitty Hawk allows leashed dogs on the beach year-round and has seasonal lifeguards — see our beach guide.
- Plan for Saturday traffic. Arrive before 11 am or after 5 pm to skip the bridge backups.
- Book direct when you can. See how to book a by-owner rental safely.
