Outer Banks Vacation FAQ
Booking, pets, beaches, weather, groceries and getting here — answered by a local Outer Banks owner.
Booking & our homes
How do I book one of your Kitty Hawk homes?
Each home’s page has a “Check availability on Vrbo” button with live rates and a calendar. Direct booking on OBXFRBO.com is coming soon.
Do your prices include all fees?
Yes — the prices we quote include all fees. No surprise add-ons at checkout beyond any pet fee you choose.
What day do rentals start?
In season, our homes rent Saturday to Saturday. Check-in is 4:00 PM and check-out is 10:00 AM.
Do I need to bring sheets and towels?
For Big Deck Beach House and A Carolina Conch, yes — beds have mattress pads, pillows and coverings, but guests bring linens and towels (or rent them from a local Outer Banks linen service). Check each listing for details.
Are the homes really on the beach?
Yes. All three are directly oceanfront on the Kitty Hawk Beach Road with private beach access.
How many guests can stay?
Crab House and Big Deck Beach House sleep 10 each; A Carolina Conch sleeps 9 — up to 29 together.
Is smoking allowed?
No. All of our homes are non-smoking.
Pets
Are dogs allowed?
Yes. Each home allows up to two dogs with a $250 pet fee per dog. A Carolina Conch is dogs only.
Can my dog go on the beach?
Yes — Kitty Hawk allows dogs on the beach year-round. In summer daytime hours (10 am–6 pm) dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
The Outer Banks
When is the best time to visit the Outer Banks?
Summer (June–August) is peak beach season. September is a local favorite: warm water, fewer crowds and lower rates. Spring and fall are great for fishing, birding and golf.
When is hurricane season?
June 1 through November 30, with the most activity in August–October. Follow Dare County Emergency Management for evacuation orders, and consider travel insurance for late-summer and fall trips.
Is Kitty Hawk a good location?
Yes — it’s central. Duck is about 20 minutes north, Nags Head 20 minutes south, the Wright Brothers Memorial about 12 minutes away, and groceries under 10 minutes.
Where is the nearest grocery store?
Harris Teeter, Walmart and Food Lion are clustered at the north end of Kitty Hawk/Southern Shores, about 2.5–3 miles from our homes. Publix is about 4 miles south in Kill Devil Hills.
Where can I buy alcohol?
Beer and wine are sold at grocery stores and bottle shops. Liquor is sold only at state ABC stores — the closest is at 5440 N Croatan Hwy in Kitty Hawk.
What is the closest airport?
Norfolk International (ORF) in Virginia, about 1 hr 40 min away. Raleigh-Durham (RDU) is about 3½ hours.
Are the beaches crowded?
Kitty Hawk’s residential Beach Road stretch is one of the calmer parts of the Outer Banks, even in July.
